Present

In Espoonlahden kirkko, I photographed PRESENT — a meditative audiovisual performance where instrumental music and voice met smoke and light in slow, deliberate motion. The space was quiet and attentive: a seated audience, still enough to feel the room breathe, and present enough to register small shifts—posture changes, softened expressions, the moment focus turns inward.

With no flash and near-silent shooting, the approach was restraint. The goal was to preserve what the eye experienced: beams of color finding a surface in haze, “flaming” smoke sculpted into shape, and the performers framed by atmosphere rather than spectacle. The technical challenge was constant—very low light, shifting intensity, smoke that alternately revealed and erased detail—so composition and timing mattered more than volume.

The images center on presence: Hale Heikkilä’s multi-instrumental performance moving between acoustic and electronic textures, and Anne Weckström’s lighting transforming shared air into a canvas. Delivered as a curated set of ~30 digital photographs for social media and promotion, the series translates an immersive live experience into still frames that keep its calm, its weight, and its quiet clarity.
